'Not So' Ancient Mariners - Yacht Delivery

yacht transportation

If you are a yacht owner you will, at some point or another, want to transport it to another location. Now, with smaller boats, this isn't that big of a deal. But when it comes to moving around a 26 to 98 foot yacht, it's a whole different story. And if you are wanting to move your yacht long distances it can be even more of a problem. While some people love the long voyages across dangerous seas on a large boat there are some that would rather not deal with it. Those with families or business priorities that don't have time to take the trip need an alternative way to move their yacht from one place to another. And that is exactly why yacht transportation services are thriving even to this day.

Depending on the size of your yacht there are various methods you can use for yacht transportation. One method is by having your yacht loaded onto a large freight forwarder and shipped across to the destination of choice. This is generally one of the best yacht transportation methods but it does have drawbacks. One such drawback is that these freight forwarders, also commonly called container shipments, can usually only accommodate yachts up to 39 feet in length. Every freighter is a bit different but there are size restrictions for yachts being transported via this method with every one. There are several costs involved with container shipment including fees paid to customs and government, preparation expenses and documentation as well.

Another method of yacht transportation is through the use of semi-submersible ships, or SSS. These particular types of ships were originally created for moving large cargo shipments but are also commonly used for yacht transportation now. These are massive vessels being as large as 700 feet in length, have a beam around 100 feet and travel at about 18 knots when in service. Usually these ships can transport 15 to 20 yachts at a time. The process involves yachts being floated on, a hull brace welded to hold the yachts in place and then, once the semi-submersible ship arrives at the destination, the hull braces are removed and the yachts float off the ship.

Moving a yacht is a long, tedious task. To make sure that your yacht is completely safe and moved in a timely manner you pretty much have to use some sort of yacht transportation service. Otherwise, you're stuck with a rather large project that is going to be expensive, full of long days and bound to stress you out beyond belief. But using one of the yacht transportation methods listed above will alleviate this burden and make your life much easier. Most yacht transportation companies have been around for decades and provide flawless service. They transport billions of dollars worth of boats every year and the last thing they want is to have to pay for damages. So you know that when you use one of these services your yacht is in good hands.
